I waited in the Vesper town square admiring the decorations that Atheena had put up for a celebration. I had just managed to negotiate the maze of hay bales. Avalanche, my horse, and I stood back away from the towering columns of flame that now adorned the north end of the square. Before long a familiar face came around the corner. It was Lord Bryndle with a dragon in two. This was the first time I had ever seen a blue dragon before.
“I’ll be right back,” he called, as he led the dragon around the corner to the stables.
Upon his return he muttered some familiar words and a familiar shimmering blue oval appeared in front of him. I stepped through the moongate after him and a circle of stones. The words of a shrine in Ilshenar hung in the air as he disappeared into another moongate. Following quickly behind him I found myself in the middle of a small clearing in the mountains. We made our way down a long rock passage and soon came out in the midst of a forest. Lord Bryndle waited astride his lama as I caught up. The green of the forest shimmered through the body of his lama.
“That is one fast Lama,” I said. I was just barely able to keep up.
“Off to the bridge,” he called as he and his lama sped off into the distance.
It took me a scant few moments to find myself lost in the midst of the forest. Howls of beasts echoed through the forest. I stood in a clearing wondering which way to turn. I chose a direction and soon found my way blocked by dense underbrush.
“I don’t think this is the way,” I told Avalanche.
“Over hear, this way,” a voice shouted in the distance. It came from the right, the direction I now headed. Soon a white stone bridge over a small creek came into view. Lord Bryndle waited half way across the bridge. No sooner had I caught up than he sped off once again…a man on a mission who knew exactly where he was going. We rode aside the creek for some distance and a large temple like structure came into view. I gazed at it as it towered above us at the top of the mountain we were approaching. Rounding a corner we came face to face with a large stone arch.
“We have to go through here fast,” Lord Bryndle cautioned me.
“Fast?” I asked, “and what was that back there?”
We soon found ourselves tearing down hallways, being chased by undead. We turned down a staircase and came face to face with a tower of moving blood. “This”, I thought to myself, “must be the reason for hurrying.” How wrong I was.
The sound of a mighty roar filled the halls…in the very direction we were headed. I soon found out the reason for hurrying. Lord Byrndle and his lama sped off, charging in the direction of the balron.
“Great,” I thought, “a balron…and he has LOTS of company.”
Lord bryndle managed to speed through the room unscathed. I paused for a moment and thought, “If he can do it, I can to.” Avalanche and I charge across the room, his hooves splashing in the puddles of blood that filled the floor. Lord Bryndle disappeared around a corner in front of me as the balron disappeared in the distance behind me. I caught up with Lord Bryndle as we found ourselves at an intersection. Glowing runes formed a square space in the middle of the floor.
“Okay,” He said, “You have to have your invisibility spell prepared before you step into the square…he is a one shot kill.” Lord Bryndle muttered the words of a familiar spell and stepped into the square. One moment he was there…the next he wasn’t. I paused staring at the square. Magic, was not my strong suite. Hiding yes, magic no. The sound of eight feet on the floor in front of me became the deciding factor. A black widow spider the size of a horse came into view as I stepped into the square.
I found myself in a long hallway lined with jail cells. A gargoyle rattled the bars of his cell to my right. Setting off the invisibility spell I hear a sound that was also familiar…too familiar…
The spell fizzled, just in time for the largest frog I have ever seen in my life hop into view.
Kermit the Frog.
Fortunately His Mupppetness was already distracted by “slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.”
Kermit already looked like a pin cushion. The arrows of ten assailants continued. Lord Bryndle fired his bow again as I dove for the shadows. Kermit continued to hop around like…well…like a frog on a hot plate…The twang of bowstrings continued for what seemed like an eternity.
“I think you are only making him mad…” my words trailed off.
How wrong I was.
It was not long after that Lord Bryndle had the “fixings” for the worlds largest plate of frog legs.
“One in twenty has a bless deed.”
Lord Bryndle was a man of few words…but when he spoke…denizens of the deep listened. I looked down at the slimy green mess on the floor that had once been the muppetlord…
“I will not eat them in a box, I will not eat them with a fox, I will not eat them Sam I Am…” My voice trailed off.
“What’s that?”
“Oh nothing I said…nothing…”
“I’ll be right back,” he called, as he led the dragon around the corner to the stables.
