Keiko sat on the landing behind her Helike home. A warm breeze blew over her skin as the sun slowly set in the west, slipping behind the flower covered mountain in the distance. She could hear the rush of the waterfall as it rushed over the rocks and into the sea. The waves splashed against the wooden dock and her shins as dangled her legs over the edge.
The sound of footsteps broke her reverie.
She didn’t have to turn around; she knew the sound of the footsteps already. A familiar voice came from behind her.
“We’re moving.”
Keiko’s head snapped around. She stared straight into Tatsumi’s eyes.
“What?!”
“I said…we’re moving” came the reply.
“Don’t I have a say in this? Keiko shouted back.”
”No.”
“And why NOT?” Keiko’s voice rose. What about the temple? What about being mayor? I LIKE IT HERE!”
Tatsumi paused for a moment.
“I resigned.”
“Why ever did you do that?!” shot back keiko.
“Oh I don’t know, Tatsumi said with a wry smile, perhaps it was the hustle and bustle of all the activity here…”
Another pause as the wind whistled between the deserted houses…
“Okay, Okay Tats…so our nearest neighbor is a dolphin so what? I like it hear, warm breezes, bright light…”
“Calm down Keiko. You’ll like it where we’re going. It has bright lights, plenty of breezes and a lot more room for little Helia to play in.”
Keiko’s eyes narrowed. She tried to bore a hole in Tatsumi’s head as if she could somehow see the truth inside…
“Oh ya? Breezes eh? Sunlight eh? More room you say..and just where are we going?”
Tatsumi braced herself for the onslaught as if a voice had just shouted “Ramming Speed…”
Then quietly…she replied with one word…
“Ice”
“WHAT!” Screamed Keiko, “THE DUNGEON!”
“no…the island.”
Keiko’s voice rose to a fevered pitch that would have made a balron flinch…
“LIKE THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE!” She turned and stomped toward the opposite end of the deck. Turning she glared back at Tatsumi…this time her voice was quiet…and for that all the more threatening… “Bright lights? Ya’ sure; as in snowblind. Breezes…ya…like in blizzards…and just where will we be living that will have more room a cave?”
“Close. We will be living in a stone keep.”
“A stone keep?” Keiko asked as a small smile passed over her face. “Really?”
“Really…” Tats replied quietly.
Keiko’s grin grew even larger. “We’re moving on up.”
“To the east side…way far on the east side…”
Reserved now, Keiko asked, “Can I have my own room?”
“You can have your own tower…”
“Really?”
“Really..”
“and how far will I have to go to mine ore, asked keiko, will it be another long trek?”
“I don’t know,” a big grin crossed Tatsumi’s face,” do you think you can handle having to walk across the room to mine ore?”
“Across the room?”
“Across the room!”
“Way cool!” came keiko’s happy reply.
“More than you know keiko…more than you know…”
Both Tatsumi and Keiko walked off laughing to get the packing crates.
