The two women, one younger, one much older, stood side by side as the cold wind blew snow in their faces….both rapt in reverie. The object of their attention was a fresh mound of dirt that stood out in contrast to the stark white of the surrounding frozen tundra.
“I am really going to miss mom,” said the younger of the two.
“As will I,” replied the older woman with a sigh.
“Tomoe…”
“Yes?” replied the older woman.
“Mom, tried to prepare me for this day. All the same, I never thought it would come. Somehow I always thought when I set out for these new lands…these…What was it?”
“…Porch of maidens” said Tomoe.
“…I thought that when I set out, that she would be with me…to help me get a start. What should I do?” said Helia, turning to Tomoe.
“It is said, replied Tomoe gravely, still staring down at the fresh grave, instead of being concerned that you have no office, be concerned to think how you may fit yourself for office. Instead of being concerned that you are not known, see to the worth of being known.”
“Umm…ya…right..” said Helia, not wanting to appear ignorant. I mean, I am not sure where to even begin. Do I just grab a sword and set out to find fortune and fame?”
“Never give a sword to a man who can't dance”, replied Tomoe.
This time, a little irritated, Helia snapped back at Tomoe, “…and just what is THAT supposed to mean? I don’t’ even know what you are talking about.”
“When you know a thing,” Tomoe replied calmly, “to hold that you know it, and when you do not know a thing, to allow that you do not know it - this is knowledge.”
Helia, stared at Tome and yelled, “LOOK,WILL YOU STOP THAT INSCRUTABLE GARBAGE?”
Tomoe sighed.
Rolling her eyes, Tomoe replied, “You can pick your nose, you can pick your friends, but the best place to start is by picking at the mountains for ore.”
“Really?”
“Really. That is how your mother started out, with nothing but a shovel and strong will power.”
