I'm gonna start by saying there is no right or wrong way to RP your character...
For those of you who are avid RPers, I'm not talking to you. You know what you're doing, but for some, they have no idea where to begin, they play thier characters and speak to those who they come across as they would talking on an IM or ICQ. In an RP world, this is BAAD. I have noticed there are folks on here who strictly RP thier characters in game, which is cool because that adds a bit of fun. The following are tips and pointers to people who want to RP but don't know how to begin or what some of the "bad rp" things are...
1) While IC, Do not speak of RL things. -- Some common mistakes are, "Hey, ICQ me." In the UO world, ICQ doesn't exist. Neither do computers, phones, TV's, Playstations, xboxes.. you get the idea... instead of saying ICQ, RP's usually say something about pigeon numbers are12345567. Get the idea?
2) If you conversing with someone you know IRL, and you are discussing RL things, like the party this weekend, do it in party. The rest of the shard doesn't need to know your personal life.
3) If you are trying to RP a specific role, IE an evil char, you wouldn't find an evil person hanging around in a city bsing with friends. Sorry, Do you see Osama sitting at a cafe in Rome? No, he's hiding out!
4)One other common mistake is referencing your other characters... well, this isn't right... If you are acting as Ardan and you need something for your other character Jojo then instead of saying "I need that wood for my other character jojo" you could say "I need that for my brother Jojo" or simply, "I need that" .. remember that when you're acting, that Character is it's own entity. It's as if the person REALLY exsists, and while you might be best friends with Buhby in RL, if Buhby kills Ardan, Ardan isn't going to like Buhby very much and may decide that Buhby is his mortal enemy now... It's all in how you ACT your part...
Those are just SOME common mistakes. As I said in the begining, There is no right or wrong way to RP. But remembering to stay in character seems to be the hardest thing RPers have to do... and staying IC is what sets apart the avid RP to the wannabes...
