My friends, let me relate the events to you of the last few days:
Kannon is in her library reading the nirvana sutra. She turns the page, angling the book to get a better view in the glowing candlelight. Winston, her dog is laying at her feet, rolled onto his back on the soft rug. The wind blowing through a nearby window begins carrying more than just the sound of waves splashing against rocks…Winston is the first to react. He jumps up and runs to the door. Standing in the doorway barking intently, he is staring at something Kannon cannot yet see. Reaching the door, she sees what Winston sees. A man, dressed in little more than the tattered remains of a shirt and hakama pants is struggling up the hill toward Kannon’s pagoda. Reaching the porch, half dead, he struggles to get the words out through gasps for air.
Kannon, her eyes full of mercy and compassion for the plight of the dieing man, leans over and holds his head. Brushing his cheek, she mutters soothing words to comfort him in his last moments. Gathering what little strength is left to him, the man at her feet speaks…
“Dear Kannon, I have won this scroll from one of the followers of darkness; at the cost of my life, it seems. I cannot read its contents. Perhaps a greater scholar than I will manage, for I am but a man of arms. My master tried and cannot and sent me hence. My steps here were hounded by the minions of the evil one, at every turn. Before he died. All that the one who guarded this scroll would tell, is that it contained the beginnings of a plan to bring great chaos to the world. It appears to be in a language that none can understand without the key…” the man’s voice trailed off.
“Rest now,” said Kannon gently stroking his forehead, “your troubles are over.”
Reaching up and grasping her arm with a bloodied hand, the man struggles for breath.
“No, there is little time left to me now. I am going home to be with my ancestors. You must understand, the key to decipher the language in the scroll is contained in a book entitled “The Grimoire of Chaos” This book has been guarded by the followers of minax for eons past. They have hidden it safely, where they thought no one would ever find it. It alone is the key to reading the scroll….” With that the man could speak no more. He rested there with his head in Kannon’s lap. She held his hand and comforted him as he began his journey home.”
The scroll I took and placed on a table in my library. I have not been able to read the scroll, as I have expected. I fear what it contains but it is only prudent that its contents be known. Therefore, I call all brave defenders of the realm to aide me in my quest. I call all of you to search the realms in search of this book. It may be hidden someplace, or in some one or some things possession. The brave soul who will bring me this book…this “Grimoire of Chaos” I will reward with a gift worthy of your struggles, and my favor. In the city of Zento, there is a small café. I will leave a rune to my pagoda locked down on a table there to my home for any worthy soul to use should they wish to accomplish this great quest for me.
